Bossier Parish was carved out of Natchitoches Parish. The parish is named after Pierre Evariste Bossier, a member of Congress and descendant of an early settler of Natchitoches.

General Bossier had a famous duel with General Galennie of Cloutierville. Bossier won; though he did not fire the first shot.

The parish seat was moved to Benton, a boomtown on the Cotton Belt Railroad.

For a time, Bossier Parish was known as the "birthplace of secession" with more than 800 soldiers of the Confederate army coming from here.

Welcome to Benton, the seat of Bossier Parish, is in the northeast section of the state. It's served by State Highways 3 and 162.
